The Influences on Self-Esteem and Depression of Parent-Adolescent Communication for the Adolescent

Abstract

|
Objectives : This study investigated the influences of adolescents`` perception of parent-adolescent communication on their self-esteem and depression.
Methods : The research design for this study was a descriptive survey design using convenience sampling. Data were collected through self report questionnaires from 737 high school students in Seoul and Jeollabuk-do Province. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 program, and included t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple stepwise liner regression analysis.
Results : Variables were measured in a five-point scale. It was shown that father-adolescent communication was 2.98, mother-adolescent communication was 3.05, self-esteem was 3.50 and depression was 2.18. Parent-adolescent communication was a significant predictor in explaining adolescents`` level of self-esteem(16.9%) and depression(13.3%).
Conclusion : The findings of this study give useful information for constructing an intervention program for adolescents.
